FTF – Swedish Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics
FTF (FlygTekniska Föreningen) was founded in 1933 in Stockholm. In 1968 there was a merger with the Swedish Interplanetary Society (Svenska Interplanetariska Sällskapet) into what constitutes the present society. In consequence the name in Swedish was changed in 2014 into Flyg- och Rymdtekniska Föreningen, but the abbreviation FTF was retained.
The purpose of the society is to promote and stimulate the interest in technology of aeronautics and astronautics in Sweden.
Today FTF has about 1200 members, mostly aerospace engineers. Besides the main branch in Stockholm, FTF has local branches in five other cities, Gothenburg, Kiruna, Linköping, Trollhättan, and Malmö where the leading aerospace industries are situated.
FTF is member of international organizations and has been the host for several international aerospace congresses. FTF is member of IAF – International Astronautical Federation – since its foundation in 1950 (www.iafastro.com ) and hosted the 11th IAF congress in 1960 and the 36th IAF congress in 1985 in Stockholm. FTF is a member of ICAS – International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences – since its foundation in 1957 and hosted ICAS congresses in Stockholm in 1962, 1990 and 2022. FTF also hosted the ICAS Secretariat (www.icas.org ) from January 2003 until 2010 succeeding the French society AAAF. The ICAS secretariat was physically located at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) in Stockholm. FTF is also a member of CEAS – Council of European Aerospace Societies (www.ceas.org) and hosted the CEAS 2013 congress in Linköping Sweden.
Every third year since 1992, FTF conducts a national aerospace congress devoted to the progress of aeronautics and astronautics in Sweden. These congresses, which usually are fully seated with up to 500 participants, have become the most important forum for aerospace engineers in Sweden. To get international views on actual topics FTF has invited top level managers from the leading European and international Aerospace consortiums to give lectures at the congress.
FTF frequently arranges seminars and lectures in aerospace topics. The evening lectures take place in each of the local branches so that the members are informed about the current aerospace news.
FTF annually is presenting awards for outstanding achievements in aerospace technology in Sweden. The Thulin medal, in gold or silver, is normally given to about two or three persons every year since 1944.This FTF award, approved by the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, is considered to be the most distinguished in aerospace technology in Sweden.
The FTF Bulletin ”Bevingat” is released four to six times a year and distributed to the members. It can also be downloaded from this website.
As a nonprofit technical information society, FTF derives its main financial support from member dues and from congress registration fees.
The point of contact in the Swedish Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the Secretary in the main branch in Stockholm.
